Q. How important to my health is my bite?

A. Very important! A bite that is out of alignment can cause  the following health concerns:

  • TMD (Temporomandibular Joint Disorder)
  • Headache and pain in the jaw or joints
  • Clicking, ringing or congestion of the ears
  • Dizziness
  • Loose teeth
  • Tooth clenching or grinding
  • Face pain or sensitivity

Q: How important is what I eat to my dental health?

Critical to both dental and total health, a well-balanced diet of healthy foods is a good place to start, but unfortunately is not enough. If you consider the increase in the modification, processing, genetic alteration, forced ripening, long storage, foreign supply, as well as the general manipulation of our food supply, it has become extremely difficult (if not impossible) to get from the food we eat all the nutrition required for optimum health. Because of this, I believe that everybody needs some nutrient supplementation.

I have studied nutrition for more than thirty years. I have taken courses on this subject at the University of Connecticut, Temple University, Indiana University, New York University, and the University of Pennsylvania, as well as numerous courses at national scientific meetings of the American Dental Association. I have read thousands of pages of research on nutritional supplementation; it is my conclusion that the Shaklee Corporation produces by far the best nutritional products available anywhere in the world. In addition I, my family, and many of my friends have personally enjoyed the benefits of this companies products and expertise for many years.

Q. Is diet soda all right to drink?

A. Watch that diet soda! It can be nearly as bad for your teeth as sugary drinks. Many diet sodas contain even larger amounts of phosphoric and citric acids than their naturally sweet counterparts, and the acid content in the “sugar-free” drinks can be high enough to damage your tooth enamel. Ask for our reference sheet on the acidity levels of different drinks; it is free of charge.

Q. How Can I Take Care of My Teeth During the Work Day?

Keep a toothbrush in your briefcase. In a recent study, about 40% of respondents said that a co-worker’s smile was more noticeable than his or her clothes or hairstyle. Yet less than 45% brush while at work. It’s a long day for teeth that are brushed after breakfast and then ignored until bedtime. After each snack or meal, bacteria are hard at their work – producing acids that stick to tooth enamel and cause gum disease and tooth decay. So, take your toothbrush to work. But, if it’s impossible to brush, at least rinse your mouth with water for thirty seconds or more at some time during the day.

Q. What if I can’t brush after a meal?

After you eat (if you don’t have a toothbrush handy or an appropriate place to brush) chew a stick of sugarless gum instead. There’s now more evidence than ever pointing to the possibility that chewing sugarless gum for twenty minutes after you eat can lower your chance of developing new cavities. Chewing gum stimulates saliva production, which then washes away food particles and plaque that cling to your teeth after you eat.

Q. Can children get gum disease?

It’s sad to report that gingivitis may be found in:

  • 38% of children under thirteen;
  • 50%of children from 6 to 12
  • 90% of adolescent

Children’s gum disease comes from plaque accumulating because of poor dental hygiene, misaligned teeth, or improper care of orthodontics. With your kids, make sure you stress proper brushing and flossing, especially if they wear braces!
